Yo all, just an opinion piece.

So I was thinking - I love my Halo fic; Castaways. It's one of my most highly reviewed fics and one of my personal favorites. I also think it's really well written. It's been on DA, FF.net and a portion on Halo.Bungie.org for a long time.

Thing is, since the fic is a sequel to Halo3, when Halo4 comes out the events of said story will be rendered moot. That of course doesn't take away from the enjoyment of the fic itself... some will swear up and down that the 343 trilogy is AU anyway because of canon interference... but it gives me a thought.

I think the fic is well enough written to be a novella. I'd have to change it around a bit - change some names, find a new explanation for a construct like Cortana existing and giving the Chief a different but similar backstory - But I think it's entirely feasible. Unfortunately the only way to actually shop a novella like this is to rip all the fanfics off the internet and submit to literary magazines and contests. I'll have a piece of original (if heavily heavily influences) work on my shelf but also a much narrower audience for it.

So the question is; is losing the Halo soul of the fic and stealing it away from hundreds of people's favorites galleries worth that? Technically if it stays close enough to its fanfic source material it's already lost first publication rights anyway. There's the chance of adding some more guts to it and turning it into a full novel, but it's 35,000 words - not nearly enough for publication (Publication likes things to be at least 80,000).

So I know what I'm kind of leaning toward but I want to hear opinions. With Threadcaster kind of wrapping up here soon, it might be fun to do some scifi retooling in the interum.
