13 N'Deh - Project880
30 Character Challenge
Other Characters: [link]

I know what you all are saying "WHAAAAH? Jame? What is this weird devilry you speak of? Who the crap is N'Deh? And why did you say he was from Project880 when he's OBVIOUSLY a Na'Vi from Avatar!?!

Well folks, this will answer all your questions:
==============> [link] <================

Avatar started back around Titanic as Project 880, a story about human controllers in native avatars trying to gain the trust and cooperation of the indigenous people of Pandora in order to put them to work in mineral refineries. You'll have to read the treatment to know more, but suffice to say I would have probably been a big fan of Project880 before they changed everything.

N'Deh here is my favorite character and he was cut clean out of the final draft. There's no art of him, so I had to make him up entirely off the top of my head. I don't think I did a bad job of it either. He was the Na'Vi guide the Avatars hooked up with regularly to help relations between the local NaVi village and the human encampment. Josh (Jake) first meets him on his initial trip into the woods with Grace and company. N'Deh is a pretty okay guy as far as I can tell. He leads them safely through the forest and defends them against the very belligerent animals. Then when they regroup with the humans, he discovers they've killed some horses while they were waiting! He's heartbroken! Killing animals not for food or protection - some of those horses might have braid-bred with him at some point! Grace gets pissed off at the humans. Later in the village when Josh has been saved from that little getting lost part with the panther thing it's revealed that N'Deh and Grace are actually an item! How romantic! It's like Jake and Neytiri only backwards. Grace and N'Deh are a pretty healthy romance but there's a third pair of Avatar/Native lovers that don't end up so well... showing that "going native" is actually an issue they run into often around here and it can have both positive and negative results. Hedger, the "not so well" controller is my second favorite character. No wonder I didn't enjoy the movie, all the people I would have liked were eliminated before principle photography.

So I drew a picture of N'Deh in honor of his memory and to bring attention to Project880. If you read the article above, you'll learn the rest of his story and what actually happened on Pandora in the original concept. Maybe it will help you enjoy Avatar even more.

He's very stunning! But yes, AVATAR would have been better if they stayed with the original plot. Plus, I like it in movies that it's the second main character guy having the love interest instead of the main character. Project 880 forever in our hearts!!

We shall carry the torch.

They should write it into a book! Do you think James Cameron would notice if I wrote him a letter about it?

It shall be never ending.

It would be very interesting and very nice to have it turn into a book. If you write to him about, I do hope he notices. The world must know about it!

I agree. As much as I loved Avatar, Project 880 would've been infinitely more awesome.

Project-880 definitely sounded like a more compelling movie then Avatar, but unfortunately it still suffers from the same critical flaw as Avatar (besides all the others): the setting is impossible, and I'm not talking about Pandora and its wildlife, I'm talking about Earth and RDA's reasons for being on Pandora being impossible. It took me all of ten minutes, but I was able to run the math and found out that the city-world Earth is supposed to be in Avatar is impossible to achieve within 100 years and with 20 billion people (it would take 800 billion people to reach London levels of population density if all the World's landmass was being used), not to mention the fact that the waste heat from such a city would cook anyone actually on the planet. Now, without Earth being a city-world RDA's reasons for being on Pandora and obtaining unobtainium fall through since people don't need the rock to save human civilization, and even if they did like in the movie they wouldn't just allow one company with one base to mine the stuff since every nation and every country in the world would be landing armies and setting up mining operations to get the stuff back to Earth.

OK, I'm done. Sorry, but Avatar really tends to get under my skin, it's like a shorter sci-fi version of Twilight with Al Gore as Edward, and less shipping. But at least a few writers were able to get something from it</a>.

Your art though seems pretty good. Though I have to ask, what's with the ears? They seem . . . bigish.

I'm with you on Avatar, I didn't like it for all the story assumptions and plotholes, and how blatantly obvious it all was.

And as for the ears... I dunno? Since I didn't have an actual character for reference I broke from my NaVi research images about halfway through and focused on "Making him look cool" and I guess making his ears bigger were part of that. I always thought their silly little cat ears were kinda dumb looking... these looked like they had a bit more structure and I found that attractive. That's my only excuse for it though - I thought it looked cool. That was James Cameron's excuse for the whole dumb movie.

Actually, I think the na'vi ears were supposed to look like elf ears. After all, James Cameron's Elves Are Better, or at least he tried to pull that off. Personally, I find the whole global hive mind thing to be downright spooky.

What about the part where they have cat noses and tails? And the Gaea theory is nothing new... not a lot in Avatar is new -_-

No, no it isn't, but the problem is that a lot of people think it is, and some of them even develop psychiatric problems because they really believe that Pandora is better then Earth. I swear, you'd think these people never left the city or looked at a fricken map by the way they talk. Gah, the worst part is that after a certain point I don't even know why I'm complaining, I never complained this much about Twilight -- maybe it's because I never had the misfortune to read Twilight.

Though I do suppose do know where the people that write those Warhammer40k crossovers are coming from now . . . No I don't. Well, maybe an instance with one guy I could go with, what was his name? Oh yeah, Ciaphas Cain, HERO OF THE IMPERIUM!!!

Hm. Shoulda Kept N'Deh. I know the Na'vi were supposed to be run by a male leader but with all the girls around I thought it was a Matriarchy.
