18 Long John Silver - Treasure Planet

While I'm busy drawing pictures of people that I've always wanted to draw but haven't, here's Long John Silver from Disney's Treasure Planet.

Long John the character is the same classic dude from Treasure Island but as a practical feat, John is one of the first (if not the first) hybrid 2D/3D character. When you watch the movie, his body is obviously hand-drawn but his cybernetic arm, leg and eye are all computer generated. This is amazing considering the tech at the time the COOPERATION required to articulate a performance separated through time and technology. And what a performance it was.

I got Treasure Planet because it did such a good job telling the story of a boy and his father figure. You see John take young Jim in, teach him everything he knows then struggle with whether or not to give that surrogate son up for treasure. There's a real emotional story going on in the movie and John is such a fluid and plastic character to play with. Watching the movie, I am mesmerized by his weight and all the folds on his face and neck. The physics drawn by the animators is so good... and being in 3D myself I know it would take a ton of computational time and programming to get the same effect in a geometric model. John signifies an accomplishment in 2D, 3D, and character performance. I really can't stop watching him. The whole movie was good, but I'm a huge nerd for Long John Silver.

i would have thought it difficult to do him in grayscale a bit since he had that weird pale part of him where a beard probably once was. well done. a good piece to be proud of.
