Gordon belonged in this meme from the very start. He's one of my favorite game protagonists ever. Why you ask?

Simply because the man is a Theoretical Physicist, not a super soldier. The first game is less of him being a hero and more of him trying his darndest to save his own heavily armored hide. I like that he's a normal dude who has been elevated to messiah status by no real fault of his own, yet he steps up and just goes with it inspiring hope and saving people throughout the rest of the series. I also like that he does not talk, but we can still tell who his character is based on the actions he makes and other people's responses to them. I found myself role-playing Gordon verbally sometimes much to my amusement. He's the Last Free Man, an MIT educated problem solving machine loaded down with both time tested weapons and highly experimental equipment ready to save humanity from alien invaders. Plus he and Alyx are cute.
