What's Fire Good for?

Dinner

This is Bastian, he's from my book, and i've been trying really hard to get interested in him, because he's really important to the plot and I'm just not that excited about him because he's barely in it right now.

He's travelling alone, which means I can't have conversations with him, which always helps my attraction to characters, and he's a fairly internal person so he wouldn't say that much anyway. So I decided to make a little brainstorm series of Bastian on the road... what does he do? He does he do it?

The deal with Bastian is that he's grown up being able to use the five elements however he wants, so I figure he's used to them enough that they're like another set of hands... and he probably uses them for small jobs not necissarily worthy of tapping the blood of the earth for... like cooking ^^ I plan on doing five of these... one for each element.

And in case you're curious, this is helping me grow more attached to him ^^

And the background sucks, I tried about a million things, and this is the best I could do.

Edit:
I've put up a new background... The other one still exists... I might put it in scraps and see which one is better. I like this better because its simpler... but the other one was agood becuase it gave a location.

I've changed it back now, after some outside input from a couple people ^^ The scrap is deleted

This is all mouse drawn btw

Fire is good for getting things that people won't give you. Like matches.

You're writing a book, Jame? :o wooooooow!

darn, it's so much time I don't come on DA that I lost so much important stuff from my friends T___T *sigh*

Anyways, the drawing is awesome, and the pose is very natural and yet dynamic. Lovely! :3

"Yes he's my character, but sometimes characters behave on their own. A good character, one that really stands out, has his own life in a way. There are certain things he would or wouldn't do or would or wouldn't say. For example, I've written situations where the characters said or did everything I'd planned for them in the plot, but their interaction didn't feel right, so I'd have to go back in and change it until I felt more comfortable with their characters. Once I needed my party of characters to go into a dangerous situation to hit a plot point, but they couldn't see a reason and vehemently did NOT want to go, so it took a little reworking to pull it off. Literature does have a life of its own."

YESYESYESYESYES! Could not have said it better myself.
I love it when my characters have that kind of action in my mind. I was recently working on a story and it was an introduction that occured between two characters who will later be of romantic interest to one another. I was planning for sort of a cat and mouse thing but apparently one of them disagreed and the next thing I know they're having lunch. *laughter* As far as getting to know the character I have the tendency to encourage mine to talk to themselves or the environment. It is hard when they're travelling alone. Maybe you could have him pass through a town? That helped greatly when working with one of my main characters.

I like the way you think ^.^

Aww. Such a cutie. It always helps to have more refs. I must tell you though- Peter's limbs absolutely ELUDE me. Though, that isn't to say I've given up. By the by, should I work on some Achi refs?

If you like ^^

I'm sorry he's trouble, I love drawing Earth Curses, for whatever reason ^^ Just the over-sizedness. If you're having trouble with anything in specific and need me to draw up some more references, I will. I've got a million sketches around here I haven't bothered to scan. Whatever you need

The "alt" in the scraps and the one here seem the same; I must've missed the changes. Looks fine to me; I like the sharp colors and his expression. His pose lends to the appeal.

Apologies if I've asked this before, but is his name short for "Sebastian"? Curious...

Yes, yes it is ^^

And its also a play on words with the word Bastion... which fits his role nicely

And yeah, you missed the changes, sorry ^^

I cant make him have conversations with people... is that better? I guess I favor spoken exposition more than writing character's thoughts is what I mean. It makes it hard for me to get my audience to like him.

what does speed racer have to do with ...? nm

Yes he's my character, but sometimes characters behave on their own. Literature does have a life of its own.

And as for the questions... I'm sure he likes those things. He's got no one to play cards with. There aren't portable music players in his world (its kind of a fantasy-based kind of place), and I don't really know what he'd read, but it would be something good to explore.

does he put salt on his fish ..
what does he think about in his 'alone moments'
does he have goals
is he a poet ? who don't know it ?

what does he have in his pockets
does he have a lucky object ?

i am not sure literature has life on it's own

but i truly appreciate the conversation . it is most interesting for me and i am learning from it

thank you

speed racer . i guess i lumped you in with anime . and i am so ignorant of the art form as it has involved

i am a story teller to the max .. all my characters work together so i am just interested in your creative process

no dis-respect intended . it's how i learn

I never took offense. The anime legion mighty and strong and will overwhelm us if we are not careful. I escaped a bit ago...

Perhaps I should start Bastian a journal and let him write about thing. I tried it once before, but I could barely get started. He was mostly rehashing backstory I already knew. I'm going to keep drawing pictures of him. I'm already feeling better about his character, and if I keep this up, by the time he shows back up in the plot I should be excited about writing his part. Because my lead character tends to gravitate toward characters I like and she's supposed to be falling in love with Bastian and I barely know him so.... yeah.
